World War II Memorial - Baltimore

World War II Memorial
600 South Conkling Street
Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland

World War II Memorial
Baltimore, Maryland

Slight deviation from my World War I focus and today's entry is the World War II Memorial at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Baltimore, Maryland. I found this one way back in 2012 when I was going to Thomas MacEntee of Geneabloggers fame speak at the Enoch Pratt Free Library. Sad thing is I just found the pictures (and many more) on a random SD card!! Needless to say, I then check all the SD cards that I "thought" were blank!!

Here is the transcription:

World War I Memorial - Boonsboro

World War I Memorial
Town Hall Annex
Boonsboro, Washington County, Maryland

World War I Memorial
Boonsboro, MD

The World War I Memorial is located in front of the Boonsboro Town Hall Annex on North Main Street in Boonsboro, Maryland. For those Nora Roberts fans, it is right across the street from her bookstore, Turn The Page Bookstore. I found this out because when I hit the roads and got to Boonsboro I encountered lots of folks for the small town. Then I found out there was a Nora Roberts book signing going on later that day. Note to self:  check for any book signings going on for future trips to Boonsboro!!

Boonsboro, MD

The memorial was one of the first memorials erected in area on July 4, 1919. There was a delay in the monument arriving so the installers worked until 2:00 on the morning of the July 4th to have it ready. The Honor Roll plaque did not arrive in time for the ceremony but was placed on at a later day. The monument cost $1,400.00 in 1919 and today the cost would be $19,255.66 (1275.4% rate of inflation!!!).

World War I Doughboy Memorial - Emmitsburg

World War I Doughboy Memorial
West Main Street and Frailey Road
Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland

World War I Doughboy Memorial
Emittsburg, MD
May 2014

The World War I Doughboy Memorial is located at the intersection of West Main Street and Frailey Road in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This Memorial has also been a favorite of mine as it was one of the first monuments I came across when I moved to Maryland many many years ago.

The Memorial was dedicated in May 1927. Being that is it at an intersection, the Memorial has had a history of cars hitting it. The latest accident happened in June 2015 with the Doughboy was knocked off of it's pedestal. When I went by it again in September 2015, it was still off the pedestal. It has finally been moved to a town facility for future repair.

Their was a call to possibly replace the Honor Roll due to the use of "Colored Soldiers" on the plaque. This memorial and many like it were erected in the 1920's when it was a totally different society than the one we live in today. In an article recently published in the Emmitsburg News-Journal entitled "Residents reject changes to Doughboy plaque" , Sharon Williams, President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Emmitsburg VFW, said it best "We should not change anything on the statue, it is not our job to change history." Check out the article when you have a chance. Nice write up by Sarah Harrington.

World War I Doughboy Memorial - Williamsport

World War I Doughboy Memorial

Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland

World War I Doughboy Memorial
Williamsport, Maryland

The World War I Doughboy Memorial in Williamsport, Maryland is located in front of the American Legion Post 202, 400 American Legion Drive, Williamsport. This one I found because someone said to "look for the blue water tower". I did and there was the road I needed!!

Williamsport, MD Water tower

The dedication in July 1926 was a big deal. Thousands came out for the ceremony and the street carnival celebrating the Memorial. The Maryland governor at the time, Albert Ritchie, became the first governor to visit Williamsport.

Today the Memorial also includes markers to commemorate the wars and military actions since World War I including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada and Panama. It also looks like they have one to be prepared for what I presume will be for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Spanish-American Memorial

Bloom Park
Spanish-American Memorial
Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland

Spanish-American Memorial
Disabled Veterans of America monument

Bloom Park History

I found this memorial courtesy of an article from 2011 "Driving tour through Washington County history".  The park was a little tricky to find only because of the numerous one way streets that make up downtown Hagerstown, Maryland but well worth it. The park was dedicated in 1900 and the monument in 1949. Also added to the site is a monument to the Disabled Veterans of America. The park features a cannon captured in Cuba.

I know of Spanish-American War memorials at Arlington Cemetery but this is the first one I have run across in my travels.

Veterans Day Week

Veterans Week Introduction

In honor of Veterans Day, I am starting off with a series of posts concerning some local war memorials. I like to ride the roads in my “nused” car I call “Dahlia” (guess what color she is!!). My particular focus right now is World War I. With the centennial of the start of the Great War, I have been reading books and watching some documentaries. So I have been hitting the roads to capture as many memorials as I can before the weather makes these outings difficult.

You have the normal memorials to the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. I know there are also memorials to the veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq starting to emerge as their service must also be recognized.

When the memorials have names listed I will transcribe them. If anyone sees an obvious typo or thinks I should check the spelling of a name, please feel free to contact me. I will check the photos and notes I took. Despite rumors to the contrary, I am human and will make a mistake or two. It’s fine to point those out!!

What's your two cents?

WELCOME!

Welcome to Denise’s Two Cents!! My views and opinions on topics that I like including genealogy, history, crafts and pets. And also those things I don’t like including my daily commute!!

So please join me for the journey to goodness knows where!!
